Day 2 - Yeah, this seems kinda halfy

  • Sep 17th, 2013 at 10:33AM

As I mentioned in yesterday's blog entry, I had to go into NYC today for what had "painful day" written all over it.  Just a bunch of meetings on topics that aren't in the pantheon of awesome.

On the plus side, the day ended up being more fun than I had thought.  The people I work with are a nice group of folks and even though a number of the topics were rather dreary it was fun to work through everything with them.  Sometimes you get so focused on the less fun stuff you forget about the fun pieces in your day, and a number of the folks who work for me or with me are definitely enjoyable people.

On the less plus side, I was in back-to-back-to-back meetings from the start of the day until the end, so I had to ad hoc everything I ate.  As a stress eater, I am very good at roughing it in the corporate wilderness.  Today I managed to get a Cliff Bar from a vending machine, 5 pieces of Le Pain Quotidienne bread that were left over in a conference room around lunchtime (it was not only 5 pieces left over, it was like a dozen, let's not go bananas here) and a handful of mini candy bars that somehow magically appeared on some flat surface somewhere.  Seriously, I am like the Bear Grylls of office survival, it's ridiculous.

The exercises went fairly smoothly and then I had two chicken thighs with Tikka Masala sauce and a little bit of rice for dinner.  A terrible fruit and vegetable day to be honest, but I figure we have lots of that to come.

Is Pearl in teams now?  Are we competing?  I'm confused man.

Hi Brett. I enjoyed reading your blog. Like the large dose of humour in your approach: "Seriously, I am like the Bear Grylls of office survival, it's ridiculous." LOL!

Brett, when I read through your first few blogs I thought yeah I'm glad to have some humor in my groups. So, we split Pearl (>100 trainees in total) up into sub-groups, this is an intense 90 days and group support is a strong part of the recipe for getting trainees through successfully, and so smaller sub-groups are appropriate for the best team / group dynamic. This will become clearer when things get real tough around the middle of the program. Welcome back into the fold!

Thanks for the kind feedback Derek and Ethna, much appreciated! Gus, that makes sense, so we are Alcor? What the h-e-double-hockey-sticks is that? At some point will we be taking on the other teams in events such as dodgeball, or Trivia? A lot of questions man.......
