Day 5 - Tech runs suck

  • Jul 15th, 2017 at 9:24AM

Running is something that, after lots and lots of work to get my stride to be "low profile/low impact" (over 18 years ago......oof that hurts to say) comes somewhat naturally to me.

Today I had to think. And I suck at thinking. My lower back started to hurt. And I really wanted to improve on my 2.69 distance, so I didn't want to slow down. And I had gas in the tank so I started my kick with 5 minutes left......and then I felt shitty.

2.75 miles - 4.2 kilometers - in 25 minutes, but my calves feel cruddy. I'm drinking wine this evening as the next few weeks will be disciplined.

Now you just watch that attitude, young man!

Maybe you are overthinking this a little bit?

So here's a secret: a tech run is a regular run, except you are paying attention. That's it. On future tech runs, I want you to pay attention just to the thing you are supposed to focus on, next week it will be your lean. You only have to do that every so often during your run. The other thing is to not worry about your pace. A tech run is about form, not pace. You have 3 other runs during the week to think about pace. Maybe even leave the watch and phone at home during your tech run.

And yes to the wine. I'm actually drinking wine and passion fruit juice right now and it's 10:15am!

You nailed both mistakes Ed. First off, I was definitely overthinking and I couldn't get out of my head. My mental pattern when running is something like music-breathing-Zone out-short notice of body feedback-back to music. Lather, rinse, repeat. Thinking about form messed me up as I couldn't get into that thought cycle comfortably.

But the other big mistake was sweating the pace. I felt like I had to improve on my prior run, which was silly and it took me further down the rat hole. Next tech run I'm going to knock the pace down and see if that helps get me out of my own head.

The truth is, I could comment "you're overthinking it," on any of your blog posts and I'd be right. :)
