Morning Relaxation

  • Jul 19th, 2019 at 10:59PM

I do my morning stretches and yoga exercises at 6am before my kids wake up. If I'm lucky, I get through shivasana in silence and calm. These pictures show that plan doesn't always workout.

In my last post I mentioned that I've been going through some serious work stress and that has made the shivasana difficult and scary. For the last few sessions, I've embraced the scary and it has been pleasant. I'm often feeling optimistic, secure and resolved. Not always, but I don't spend a lot of time in negativity and I'm bouncing back to mental positivity fairly quickly. Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and suggestions - esp Randy and Kit who gently encouraged me to open up to the scary when it was time.

Mental resiliency? Check. Emotional IQ? Check. Super social support system? Check. Wicked sense of humor? Check.

You've got all that going for you as you work through life's difficult moments. Sorry to hear about all the stress going on right now, but I know you're going to Shivasana your way through it. Call me if you need to vent!

I’m impressed that you can maintain Warrior II with a tiny one hanging off your balls. That’s some focus right there!
Shivasana has always been called the most difficult of the poses. While many think it is because the “intention” is to have a clear mind, freed from thought, I think it is because our body’s stillness leaves us no external distraction. To arrive at shivasana, is to move through pratyhara —the turning inward, away from the senses— leaving the monkey mind only to stare at itself. That IS some scary shit. While the body relaxes, the mind races to how many avocados we need for dinner, or That time you audibly farted during 5th grade gym class, or if the kids are going to end up in therapy for the rest of their lives, or in jail, or whatever. Whatever your stressor, it’s right there in the mind’s mirror. The good news is it’s all a fabrication; none of it is true and none of it is happening to you in that moment. In that moment of shivasana, Mother Earth has got you. You are safe. You are loved. And you are good enough. And if the kids are in therapy— well, that’s another hour of free time you just bought yourself... 😂😉❤️

Well done. I’ve been through scary and difficult work moments in my career too. it always works out on the end ive found. Your resilience and focus on accepting the feeling and then moving forward anyway is commendable!

‘Embrace the scary’ - that should be a mantra. Love your pictures - there are days when I wish my kids were that age again. The comments above are spot on!

Thanks for the love and support, friends. I've said many times, Kenzai is the most positive corner of the internet.

You have a beautiful mind! Remember that! Sometimes those monkeys just need to swing from vine to vine and there is no shame in that. Lean into the sharp edges. The reward is great! http://www.cc.com/video-clips/gxm161/comedy-central-presents-yoga-made-impossible

Thanks for opening up (again!) and demonstrating there is great strength in being vulnerable, Ed. Speaking of great strength. Kiddo + warrior II. Totally badass!

I think with yoga practice in particular, there is danger in taking it too seriously. Kids shut up, this is my quiet time! However, just based on the smiles and postures here, kids can help open up your practice to joy, curiosity, and silliness. Those traits are way vital than a self-serious Yoga Journal worthy pose!

Great reminder, Ward. This morning I was definitely in a "kids shut up" mood. I think I need to wake up 20 mins earlier to get that quiet time, but also remember the humor in my practice.
