Whole30 trial

We are halfway through Kettle Bells?! I feel like I'm just getting warmed-up. Although the jump to four cycles this week was a strong signal that shit got real. I'm generally feeling good, at ease, and flowing in this program. Compared to Chisel, I'm not sweating as much or running out of breath, so I feel like the cycles are harder there. Nonetheless, I'm enjoying throwing a canon ball around - esp the swing.

So a departure from program: a bunch of coworkers are engaging in a Whole30 challenge throughout the month of May and I've decided to join them. I researched the Whole30 diet and it's basically a Kenzai diet except ZERO grains, ZERO dairy, but one is allowed oils and nuts. There isn't amount restriction or gram measurement (which is obviously a problem from a results perspective), but I know my Kenzai portions well, so I'll eyeball things according to my Kenzai meals. From a trainer perspective, it's a good opportunity for me to test something out there that is popular right now. As an athlete, I'm not afraid of carbs, so I think the no grains policy is foolish, but it's just a month. I'll report back with thoughts and results throughout the month. Below is a pic of my Whole30 (also Kenzai kompliant) steak frites dinner. Fries were just potatoes cut into fry shape and then sauteed in avocado oil with spices.

Looks yum! I made a breakfast hash of sorts this morning.

Is avocado oil considered Kenzai kompliant in KB1? That looks awesome!

Yum. My sister did Whole30 for health reasons and benefitted from it - realised she had a lot of food allergies and intolerances. I considered trying it, but I feel like I'd be angry without grains.

Thomas Doyle’s latest post has a link to a Mayo Clinic review of several diets including Whole30. The conclusion is that it isn’t bad but not good to exclude complete food groups and not sustainable in the long term as a result. It will be interesting to see how you find it.

@kit - from a Kenzai perspective, vegetable oils are all ok in small amounts for keeping food from sticking to the pan. Whole30 allows liberal use of them, but I'm too engrained in Kenzai to feel comfortable with that while on program.
@Janet + @Sum, limiting entire food groups does seem unsustainable and I'm particularly wary of going so long without grains although I do have potatoes and fruit. Part of the philosophy of the program is that many people have strong negative reactions to grains, breads, dairy, alcohol, processed substances, so you eliminate all of them for a month and then add them back one at a time. So that's an interesting experiment to me. It's day 1 and I already miss my avocado toast!

Interesting, the Whole30 thing. I would imagine you will probably feel full in line with your Kenzai amounts...it would be interesting to see how much you wind up eating (if it is more grams than you are regularly eating on Kenzai). My guess, is unless you were doing Chisel, or maybe in the last weeks of Body 2 (or Body 1 for that matter), you probably won’t miss the carbs. No dairy...at least you can eat eggs. Part of my enjoyment in Kenzai is having the avacado on toast in the morning, so I would miss the toast. It is only a month though. It will be nice to hear how you fare.

Can't wait to hear how you do with Whole30! I've done it twice, both times pre-Kenzai, and didn't find that the elimination of gluten or dairy had any impact on me at all; but it got me into the habit of avoiding unnecessary ingredients and got me back to basics (whole foods) which has stuck, so totally worth it in my experience :)

JUST a month, famous last words...
So much of the ONLY differences fly in the face of Kenzai, good thing you know things about stuff to take it for a spin for the rest of us! Good luck!

I can't wait to hear how you get on with this. As much as I know about the many healthful properties of whole grains and dairy, I'm super keen to see if I'd feel different cutting them out for a while as so many people say they feel great taking a break from it. Look forward to hearing what you think, Ed!

...@Janet that is a great point we should think extremely carefully before cutting out dairy long term, especially women who are at risk of brittle bones. Its fine in the short term but longer term, you'd need to be changing your diet significantly to get all the same nutrients you otherwise get from dairy.

I will be very interested in hearing your impressions of the Whole 30 Ed. I tried it a few years back...I stayed 95+% compliant over the course of 30 days (one day I broke down and had some wine and a cheeseburger for lunch). I found that I did lose some weight over that period of time and generally felt good but definitely had some cravings. The Whole30 people do generally tout that grains can cause inflammation, but they also eat some pretty calorically dense food (nuts, seeds, etc). But at the end of the day they also tout what Kenzai HQ does: EAT REAL FOOD! Enjoy the journey!
