Run 14: Slow, Sad, Stressful Distance Run

  • May 1st, 2018 at 2:11AM

Had a big 6kms on the board today. Definitely the longest run I've done in a while. Felt underfueled from the first few minutes, but after a bit I kind of stopped feeling the run, and got really wrapped up in my own thoughts for the middle portion. Lots of stressful thoughts, lots of doubts and incriminations, lots of sadness. My pace was super slow as well, a good example that the state of your mind has a big impact on performance

The body was finally able to cope with rigors of the run, but the despair migrated to my brain on this run. Looking forward to some strength training days and more cheerful miles in the week ahead.

The mind is a powerful thing for sure. Good for you for pushing through it and getting it done. Wishing you happy thoughts on your next run. You sure do have some pretty places to run nearby. The Marin Headlands, Tiburon, Sausalito...so envious!

If you run faster you won’t have to spend as much time wrestling with the demons in your head.

@Christine you're right I appreciate the good weather and views. I don't think I could do it without at least those things in my column.
@jason unlike you I don't have a "run faster" switch to hit, I'm so slow man, this is my top speed!

Wishing you cheerful thoughts on your next run!
Maybe next time around you'd sing your favorite song out loud and who knows the run would be less daunting!

Sometime a slow run is needed to deal with thoughts.....but i find blasting music helps drown those thoughts as well..:).

Reading your blogs I am trying to decide if you even like running? Coming from someone who once upon a time DID NOT like running...but after K-Run found it to be not only tolerable but down right enjoyable. Hang in there!

@Scott I love to hate running. It's always been my nemesis. For this program I decided instead of forcing cheerfulness I'd embrace the darkness - it's surprisingly motivating!

Aww - the sadness, the pathetic runs - it all makes me want to give you a big hug Patrick. And I'm not really a hugger. But thanks for all the honesty here. Keeping it real.
Virtual hug from across the planet!

This part "but after a bit I kind of stopped feeling the run, and got really wrapped up in my own thoughts" is the best feeling when running - dark sad thoughts or happy thoughts doesn't really matter it's the act of processing those emotions and thoughts that's important. Stick with it Patrick we're all here for you.
