So I need surgery. Saw the specialist last week and he said that
a) A Platelet Rich Plasma injection would not work on my meniscus. (the tear is in a zone that received very little blood supply so it's healing capacity is greatly reduced). :((
b) A cortisone injection would cover up the issue and make it worse over time.
c) The only solution is to have surgery to repair the tear, and maybe trim the meniscus.

Great. So this means some time on crutches, and then upto 3 months without any serious high impact exercise. He also said that squats, lunges, etc would be no go until I have healed 100%. Skipping and running are out of the window for now, so I need to find some alternative avenues for cardio. I am thinking that rowing may be the way forward.........or a stationary bike.

The good news is that all my attention will be focussed on my upper body for the foreseeable future! Anyway - gotta suck it up till Jan 2020 then get this thing sorted. Nothing is keeping me from the squat rack!

Ironically I have just bought some new f%^&g jump ropes!

Sorry to hear it Scott. Surgery is no fun. But a keyhole meniscus repair is relatively easy...as knee surgery goes. I'm not so sure about rowing...bike sounds safer...but check with your doc/physio.
Good thing those big leg muscles come right back to full strength quickly after a hiatus. And surely you'll be showing off that hulking upper bod in the meantime!

    That SUCKS!
But sounds like the recovery should be short, and you have a plan...until you get punched in the mouth...

Really sorry to hear that, Scott. I'm sure it will work out fine over time but keep those guns working while the knee heals.

Sorry to hear you need surgery. Best of luck. Perhaps check out swimming for cardio?

@Robert - Thanks. I will 100% be carrying on with the upper body action!
@Janet - Thank you. Yes - swimming is a good option, just not allowed to do breast stroke. How was the honeymoon??

@ Scott - we didn't really have a honeymoon as we took a week in Vietnam before the wedding. As it was a "destination wedding" we enjoyed the time in CT with friends and family and then visited John's mom in PA for a couple of days. She is in pretty good shape for almost 91 but couldn't travel to the wedding.

That’s a bummer. It sounds like with good recovery your knee will be as good as new! Working on upper body while the knee heals is a win-win! 👍👍👍

No breast stroke? How about BEAST stroke?

Hope you heal quickly my bald brother...we will be in “club gimp,” together!

Scott - tough news, but sounds like the best long-term solution. The key is to stay healthy enough to stay healthy! For alt cardio, have you tried swimming?

@Michael - swimming has been suggested, but no breaststroke. "The key is to stay healthy enough to stay healthy" - SO TRUE!
